Description

The United States Congress worked to pass legislation reauthorizing the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) block grant, the primary cash assistance program for poor families and children. Although some may prefer that TANF reauthorization simply extend the funding period, with all current provisions, until our nation recovers from its economic downturn, many members of Congress will strive to make several changes to the TANF program. As proposals for reforming the TANF program develop, the debate over TANF reauthorization must focus on developing measures that best meet the increasingly complex and multifaceted needs of America’s poor families.
